Beginner Keiki (children ) Classes (ages 4 years to 12 years)
Keiki (children) beginner classes are designed to educate the haumana (student) with the following:
Halau Protocols
Basic vocabulary
Fundamentals of feet and hand motions
Basic hula stance and form
Chanting fundamentals
Working within a group
During this time, you will learn up to five (5) Kahiko or ancient style of
dance, and up to five (5) Oli or chants. You will learn by repetition to
recite each Oli and perform each Kahiko within this time frame. Dates of the recital will be established by the Kumu Todd upon completion of the requirments.
Beginner Classes (ages 13 years and up)
Beginner class is set up in six month increments. During this time you will learn:
Halau protocols
Fundamentals of feet and hand motions
Basic hula stance and form
Chanting fundamentals
Basic language vocabulary
Research fundamentals
Working within a group
During this six month time you will learn five (5) Kahiko or ancient style of dance, and five (5) Oli or chants. You will learn by repetition to recite each Oli and perform each Kahiko within this time frame.
At end of the six month period, you will have the opportunity to perform what you have learned. This will be your uniki (graduate) project to move to the next level of the halau. Students are encouraged to work together to retain what they have learned.
Class time and location:
Classes begin on: Sunday, August 2nd, 2009 2:00pm to 3:30pm

Intermediate and Advanced Classes (Prerequisite: Beginner Class or equivalent with references from another halau)
Intermediate and advanced classes are set up as ongoing. Students will learn:
Halau protocols
Feet and hand techniques and refinement
Hula stance for Kahiko and Auana styles
Group formations
Theatrical fundamentals for stage presence
Chanting techniques
Language vocabulary
Research assignments
Working as a group
Lei making
Costume design
Performance/competition
Fund raising techniques
Students are encouraged to work together to retain what they have learned. At the end of each year students will be required to complete a final exam of what they have learned throughout the year. This final is set up in two stages, written and performance.
